Our Programming

Music Tech Open Lab

Our Music Tech Open Lab is our mobile hub designed for hands-on exploration with cutting-edge music gear, for youth of all ages (and parents too!) from complete beginners to experienced beatmakers. This interactive space, curated by local teaching artists, is a treasure trove of the latest in music technology, featuring an array of digital instruments, synthesizers, MIDI controllers, and DJ mixers. Whether you’re looking to dive into new musical styles, connect with fellow music creators, or simply experience the thrill of trying something new, our Music Tech Open Lab offers the perfect environment for exploration and discovery in the ever-evolving world of music technology.

Drop-in Programs

Our Drop-in Programming at Roots and Beats offers a flexible, open-format environment where youth can explore media arts and express themselves creatively. Guided by experienced mentors, they are encouraged to express their thoughts, emotions, and cultural narratives through artistic mediums. This program provides a safe space for artistic experimentation and personal growth. Participants engage with various digital art tools, guided by experienced mentors, to foster self-confidence, resilience, and cross-cultural understanding. The essence of this program lies in its flexibility and inclusivity, allowing participants to engage at their own pace and according to their interests. These sessions not only enhance artistic skills but also promote emotional well-being and community connection, making them a vital part of our efforts to empower and enrich young lives through the arts.

After-School Workshops and Residencies

Roots and Beats brings dynamic learning experiences to students through after-school workshops and extended media art residencies. Conducted at SUN Community sites, alternative high schools, and in collaboration with local nonprofit youth programs, our workshops range from short, 90 to 120-minute sessions to multi-session residencies lasting 6 to 8 weeks. The content, while flexible to meet partner needs, consistently integrates elements of traditional arts and media/music technology within a framework of digital storytelling.

Music Tech Camps

Our music tech camps expand upon our educational offerings, providing a more comprehensive and immersive curriculum. These camps are enhanced with field trips to local media arts resource centers and collaborations with culturally engaged guest artists and musicians. Participants will have the chance to visit professional recording and video production studios, working alongside guest artists to record audio samples and footage for their original electronic compositions and videos. Roots and Beats instructors will facilitate these sessions, assisting students in the creation of their final works. The culmination of these camps is a public presentation, showcasing the music and videos created by students, along with performances from collaborating artists, celebrating Native visibility and community.

Our Approach

At Roots and Beats, our programs are designed with a focus on providing creative exploration rooted in cultural, educational, and professional enrichment. Cultural Exploration: We offer media arts workshops and field trips focusing on cultural identity, art, and heritage, designed to ignite curiosity and inspire creativity in youth. Accessible Education: We target Latinx/BIPOC youth in underserved communities, partnering with nonprofits to provide media arts education where it’s most needed. Career Exposure: Collaborating with local artists and resource centers, we expose youth to career opportunities in arts, culture, and creative technology, supported by community mentors.
